I begin by collecting wild clay from Dartmoor and soaking it in water for a week to hydrate and break down the clay particles. This process makes it easier to sieve the clay through a fine mesh, effectively removing any unwanted materials like roots and leaves. Once sieved, I refine the clay further into a smooth, fine slip known as terra sigillata. This slip is carefully applied in layers to the piece, creating a polished, glossy surface that highlights the natural beauty of Dartmoor's clay. Finally, I finish the work with either a clear or opaque white glaze, allowing the rich colors of the terra sigillata to shine through.
Each piece is carefully crafted and sprayed with local clay slips and further refined with terrasigillata slips, resulting in a satin finish that enhances the rich, earthy tones unique to our area.
Developing a New Range of Tableware
I am currently developing a new range of tableware featuring soft, gentle glazes accented with layers of wild clay terra sigillatas beneath the surface. These subtle accents add depth and texture, allowing the natural colours and qualities of the local clays to emerge through the glaze.
This approach creates elegant, functional pieces that celebrate the unique beauty of the Devon landscape while offering a tactile and visual richness in everyday use.
